Choosing a PRS Cartridge: Why the Best Ballistics Don’t Always Win Matches

Precision Rifle Series competition creates an unusual problem for cartridge selection.
The targets can be small, the distances long and the wind unforgiving. It is natural to assume the best cartridge will be the one with the highest velocity, flattest trajectory or least wind deflection.
That logic works on a ballistic chart. It does not always work on a PRS stage.
A competition cartridge must do more than deliver a bullet accurately. It should help the shooter manage recoil, see impacts, make corrections and operate the rifle without hesitation. It must feed reliably and produce consistent ammunition through a full match—and preferably an entire season.
The best PRS cartridge is not necessarily the one with the best ballistics. It is the one that helps a particular shooter score the most points.
What PRS Actually Rewards
The Open division of the Precision Rifle Series permits cartridges up to .30 caliber and requires muzzle velocity below 3,200 feet per second. That leaves competitors with an enormous range of options. (Precision Rifle Series)
Yet relatively few competitors choose large magnums or pursue maximum velocity. PRS does not award points for muzzle energy or an impressive trajectory.
It awards points for hits.
Most stages require shooters to engage several targets from improvised positions under tight time limits. A competitor may have to move between barricades, establish a stable position, find the target and fire multiple rounds in less than two minutes.
Under those conditions, what happens after the trigger is pressed matters. Can the shooter remain on target and see the bullet arrive? If the shot misses, can the shooter identify the miss and correct it?
A cartridge that produces slightly less wind deflection may look better on paper. If its recoil prevents the shooter from seeing where the bullet went, that advantage can disappear immediately.
Recoil Is Information
In PRS, recoil is not merely a question of comfort. It affects how much information the shooter receives from each shot.
Even a carefully calculated wind call is still an estimate. Conditions can change between stages and sometimes between shots. A competitor who sees a first-round miss can correct and possibly hit with the next round. A competitor who loses the target during recoil may repeat the same mistake.
Lower recoil also helps the shooter maintain a position on a barricade or shooting bag. Less disruption means less time rebuilding the position and reacquiring the target.
This is a major reason efficient 6mm cartridges have become so prominent. They can launch high-ballistic-coefficient bullets at useful velocities without excessive recoil in a properly configured competition rifle.
The objective is not to eliminate recoil at any cost. Heavier bullets can provide better wind performance and a more visible target response. Cartridge selection is a balancing act between recoil, wind deflection, target signature and ammunition consistency.
What Top Competitors Are Using
The 2025 Precision Rifle Blog survey of the top 200 ranked PRS shooters provides a useful look at how experienced competitors are managing those tradeoffs.
The 6mm Dasher accounted for 46 percent of the cartridges used by the top 200 shooters. The 6 GT followed at 9 percent, with the 25x47 Lapua at 7 percent, .25 Creedmoor at 6 percent and 6.5 Creedmoor at 5 percent. Those numbers do not prove that every shooter should choose a Dasher. They do reveal a broader pattern: moderate cartridges that balance recoil, wind performance and consistency continue to dominate.

What Ballistic Charts Leave Out
A ballistic calculator can estimate trajectory and wind deflection. It cannot tell a shooter how smoothly a cartridge will feed through a particular rifle, how difficult the ammunition will be to produce or whether components will be available when another 500 rounds are needed.
Some competitors enjoy handloading and are willing to tune ammunition around a specialized cartridge. Others need dependable factory ammunition. A cartridge that requires an ammunition program the shooter cannot realistically maintain is not a competitive advantage.
Consistency matters more than squeezing out every possible foot per second. The 2025 survey analysis found a stronger relationship between low velocity variation and higher finishes than between raw muzzle velocity and finishing position. That does not prove ammunition consistency is the sole cause of success, but it reinforces a practical point: predictable ammunition is more useful than velocity pursued for its own sake.
Feeding, barrel life and component supply belong in the same discussion. A cartridge may have excellent ballistic potential but require careful magazine setup. A high-volume competitor may fire thousands of rounds in a season, making barrel wear and component availability much more important than they would be for an occasional shooter.
These issues are manageable, but they should be considered before the rifle is built—not discovered during a match.
New Competitors Should Keep It Simple
An experienced national-level shooter and a first-time club competitor are not solving the same problem.
A top competitor may be capable of exploiting a small improvement in wind performance and willing to support a specialized handloading program. That shooter probably understands exactly what is being gained and what must be managed in return.
A new competitor has more important things to learn.
Building positions quickly, managing a stage, reading wind and operating the rifle consistently will produce larger gains than chasing a narrow ballistic advantage. A dependable cartridge with available ammunition allows the shooter to practice more and troubleshoot less.
For someone who does not handload, the 6.5 Creedmoor or 6mm Creedmoor can remain entirely sensible. For a shooter prepared to maintain a dedicated ammunition program, the 6 Dasher, 6 GT, 6 BRA or one of the emerging .25-caliber options may offer additional advantages.
The correct choice depends partly on how the shooter intends to support the rifle after it leaves the builder’s shop.
The Cartridge Is Only Part of the Rifle
Cartridge selection should not happen independently of the rifle around it.
Barrel contour, total weight, balance point, muzzle brake, magazine system and ammunition all affect how the rifle behaves. A mild cartridge in a poorly balanced rifle may be more difficult to manage than expected. A somewhat more powerful cartridge in a heavy, well-balanced rifle may remain easy to track through recoil.

The .25-caliber cartridges offer more wind performance and target response, while the 6.5 Creedmoor continues to demonstrate the value of simplicity and dependable factory ammunition.
The mistake is assuming one ballistic characteristic settles the argument.
The best PRS cartridge is the one that produces consistent ammunition, runs reliably through the rifle, provides sufficient wind performance and still allows the shooter to see the shot.
In a sport decided by hits, that matters more than winning a ballistic-chart comparison.
